Welcome to the Hunting Update page for Delaware River Labradors website. The 2009/2010 season is coming and I hope you'll make a trip to hunt with us. The field has been planted with strips of switchgrass and little bluestem and will provide better cover for this season's hunts. Please call or email to reserve a date for the 2009/2010 season or to have any questions answered.

We finally got some rain free weather and got in some hunts. Last week saw outdoor writer Dave Dirks with his son, Josh and friend, Rick. They had never hunted over pointing labs before and enjoyed watching the dogs perform, as well as the hunt. On 11/3, the Middletown Times-Herald Record ran the first part of a two part article on their experience at DRL Upland Hunts. Josh, fourteen years old, said he enjoyed watching the dogs as much as he did the shooting. Rick, too, was impressed and had some nice things to say.Dave Ohman followed up with his friends, Dave and Derrick, for their annual bird hunt. These guys shoot well and the results were, as usual, excellent. Saturday saw Adam Carrol along with Rusty, Rob and their DRL pup, Roebling. Their pup saw a few chukars and did well locating them. After Roebling's run some pheasants were releasd and Adam and Rob shot pretty well, completing the day in fine fashion. On 11/11 DRL had John Wertz with his friends, John and Chris for their annual trip. They had me put out a bumch of birds and shot pretty well, bagging the majority. In hte afternoon, John Franco, up from SOuth Carolina, brought his eleven year old grandaughter to walk with Grandpa. We put out some chukars and john, carrying his Arietta double, did a good job knocking some down. Thursday I had Tim Hoffman and Dave arrrive for a pheasant hunt. Dave hadn't hunted over pointing labs before and came away impressed. On Friday Steve Len had his entourage consisting of Frank, Pete and Matt. A mix of chukars and pheasants were released and away we went. We need to get Steve to take off the Ray-Bans, as it seemed they hindered him more than they helped. That aside, it was a fun day.

Brian Melvin emailed me about a charity hunt being held in North Carolina at the end of January. The proceeds go toward curing blood related cancers and is for a noble cause. It is held at a preserve in NC and is a first-class event. If you'd like a shooting vacation after the holidays in a warmer climate, I'd ecommend this event. The site is www.dahuntforthecure.com. Look it up!

Delaware River Labradors Upland Hunts (DRL) opened in September of 2006. A lease of 355 acres has been secured near Long Eddy, NY in the area known as Acidalia. The property is at the corners of Neer and Neer Hill Roads and includes two upland areas. The preserve season begins on September 1 and lasts until March 31, or until my bird supply is exhausted.

Pheasants and chukars are available to provide sport for the gunners. Standard upland packages include either twelve pheasants or chukars. Extra birds may be added to the package at the time the reservation is made in any combination. Custom hunts packages can also be had if so desired.

Guided hunts allow the clients to hunt with Duff, Adie and Muddy. All three dogs are hunt test titled. Duff, Adie and Muddy are currently performing the work of finding and retrieving birds.

SAFETY is the first priority at DRL. While not required by the New York DEC, DRL requires that flourescent orange be worn on the head and about the shoulders. A safety talk will given prior to each hunt, with standard safe gun-handling procedures gone over. No alcohol is allowed prior to and during hunts. While it's a sign of the times, insurance regulations require a release be signed by each member of the hunting party.

DRL recommends #5 or #6 shot in high brass be used for pheasants. For chukars, #6 or #7 1/2 shot will suffice. Appropriate attire will add to your enjoyment. Waterproof boots are recommended. Waterproof pants will also help keep you comfortable in the field. Layered clothing will enable to you to add or subtract, as conditions dictate.

Lodging is available in the area. I am most happy to help in arranging accomodations. There are also a number of excellent restaurants and I can , again, make recommendations to suit your tastes.
